Jane – Financial guidance in bereavement

After the death of her husband, Jane felt completely overwhelmed. She was struggling to understand the financial side of things, so a friend recommended she come to see us.

Meet Jane

Jane was recently bereaved after losing her husband. She had a son and a daughter, both of whom were due to get married soon.

Jane relied on her late husband to organise their financial lives, so felt completely out of her depth. She was introduced to us by her friend, a client of ours, who wanted to know Jane was in safe hands.

What did she need help with?

Understandably, Jane was in emotional turmoil. She needed help in all aspects of her financial life; she needed to understand what she had, what needed organising, and what the future might look like for her.

What we did

We first and foremost made sure to work at Jane’s pace and help her feel at ease with the situation. The first year was all about taking the financial administration off her, getting things tidied up and reducing her stress. We had many meetings, for issues both big and small; sometimes she just wanted help understanding letters she’d received and how to respond.

We involved a close friend of Jane’s at our suggestion (a separate friend to that which referred her to us). Her friend was someone she trusted, who helped to give her further reassurance about the work we were doing. Jane’s son and daughter were also involved so that the whole family could understand the suggestions we were recommending.

After having in-depth conversations about what was important to her, we developed a financial plan and used cashflow planning to show Jane what the future might look like. We then reviewed her investments and pensions to establish what was working well and what could be improved.

We were able to give Jane a track to run on and a clear vision of the future, which helped her to feel more confident.
